This page is dedicated to demonstrate the items that Joe currently has in the works!
Quarantine 2038
This is currently in the works. Originally part of the Quarantine Bake-Off's first on-line theater festival, this has turned into a live action film project put on by Broken Arts Productions in conjunction with Stanley Kimball as the primary editor. Stanley also takes on the part of Dag, while Zara Boss takes on Mo-Mo. This piece is called Quarantine 2038 and takes place 18 years in the future as both Dag and Mo-Mo are teenagers who have been called to quarantine. A love story that demonstrates what the world might look like 18 years after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Playground Rules - Episodic Series
Another creative work, this featuring mostly 9-12 year old humans playing parts of the sometimes sketch comedy and sometimes sketch drama. In the world of playgrounds, there are so many things that are going on at all times, that keeping up with the hierarchy of playground life might be tougher than expected. Enter Kimberly (Emma E.) who makes the rules as we go through this jaunt throughout the world of playground banter. Max (Malachi M.) is smart but still juvenile in humor and he brings much levity to every situation. Spike (Aiden W.) is the juxtaposition to Kimberly's rules as the vocal anarchist of the group. Melissa (Eva B.) often sides with Spike, but is also the voice of reason. Bobby (Carter S.) agrees with everyone to a fault as others around him clamor for authority, he champions whatever he sees. Sarah (Sarah L.) is Kimberly's scribe and best friend and while she seems to serve Kimberly, she's a powerful force by herself. Mr. Kneeland (Aric W.) is the principal and while he appears to be a bit inept and uncaring, we find out quickly throughout the series that his love for the children at his school is genuine. There are other roles as well, and we have yet to cast them (children and adults). Stanley Kimball is our chief editor and Broken Arts Productions is once again the production company behind this project.
The Key (Book 2 in the 10 Letters Series) |
Two more books plus dozens of plays in the works |
Joe is currently reading two chapters at a time of the sequel to Letter #3 on his Facebook page (link is at bottom of this page). The Key is the sequel to Letter #3.
The book begins about a week after the first book ends and follows a similar format as Letter #3. Stephanie continues to unravel mystery after mystery, although admittedly setting up the overarching story line of the series has required a much different approach in process in regards to outline. One of the hardest aspects of writing a sequel is staying true to all aspects of the first book and that requires a much higher level of attention to detail than I anticipated. Writing a sequel is so much harder than I originally thought. So I'm going to take to video blogging or vlogging two chapters at a time. We started with the prologue for The Key. https://www.facebook.com/JoeSwensonAuthor |
I'm excited to announce that there are two more book projects underway as well. Life With Charity is a novel about a man who has lived a full life, that is put into a very tough situation after suffering a heart attack. It's a study in the ripple effect of our choices while exploring the 'what if."
The second book project under this headline is a time travel book that will change the way you think about our history on this planet. We follow the seemingly crazy musings and ramblings of someone who every believes is homeless. Instead, he's a messenger. Just when you think you've heard this story before, he takes us on a journey that twists the perspective of every major historical event. This yet to be titled book has been in the works for years and will soon be prioritized. Since I updated this website about 2 years ago, I have embarked on quite the journey for writing purposes and have found a new writing niche and that is writing plays. It's fun, allows me to quickly run through stories in my head and put them to writing quicker. Other recently completed works can be found at: www.brokenartsproduction.weebly.com |

CHILDREN ARE RESILIENT
In my blog dated October 25th, 2017 I reference slam poetry as an influence to my writing. To your left is a video that was created for Children Are Resilient produced in 2013 with musical accompaniment by Jacob Davis. In this simply produced video, raw in concept as well as metaphorically complex, you learn about the only way that children are resilient. |
We are the broken people is a play that was built out of slam poems. This show was produced for PortFringe and performed live as you can tell. From a sound standpoint, please turn your sound up to hear the dialogue. There are 14 (2 sets for each character) slam poems in this show.
